Program Overview

To contribute to the future development of Japan by fostering a large number of "leading-edge AI R&D personnel" with the ability to solve "global and local medical issues" throughout Japan.

We are facing many medical issues in Japan such as an aging society, uneven distribution of medical personnel, and work style reform.

In order to confront these issues, this project aims to cultivate a wide range of human resources who can curate the rich medical issues unique to the region and design AI solutions.

Tohoku University, Hokkaido University and Okayama University are collaborating with each other, and universities in each area are cooperating, as well as research institutes, private companies, and local governments as partners to create a highly diverse project promotion system.
This project will produce "advanced medical AI R&D personnel" in the medical course and "medical AI practical application personnel" in the intensive course.

Features and Strengths

Fostering human resources who can take on the challenge of solving global and local (GLOCAL) medical issues.

Large medical areas, limited medical resources, aging society, etc. (suggestions obtained from Tohoku University's visit to the University of Oulu in Finland).
Domestic regional medical issues are actually global issues.

Challenges in rural Japan

2040
Half of all municipalities are in danger of disappearing.

2050
20% of the area we currently live in is uninhabited.

Vulnerable populations without access to healthcare are becoming more apparent.

In other words, local universities become “showcases” for a cluster of medical issues.

By conducting AI human resource development in rural areas of Japan, a country with advanced challenges,
it will be possible to develop human resources in all six key areas.

Initiatives at Okayama University

Through cross-departmental interdisciplinary cooperation and industry-academia collaboration with companies in the public and private sectors Through cross-departmental collaboration and industry-academia collaboration with companies in the public and private sectors, the entire university of Okayama University will foster "human resources for cutting-edge AI research and development.

At Okayama University, we aim to produce well-rounded medical AI human resources through interdisciplinary collaboration between the medical faculty (Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) and the information engineering departments: the Faculty of Engineering, Cyber-physical engineering informatics research core (CYPHER), Okayama AI and Secure IoT Co-creation Consortium (OASIS), and Okayama IoT and AI Security Chair (Okayama Prefecture Endowed Chair). In collaboration with private companies engaged in AI development, we will train human resources who can implement AI in society and solve medical issues with AI.
